A cidade de Manaus, no início do século XX, vivia o fim da opulência proporcionada pelo ciclo econômico da borracha. Em um período de cerca de 40 anos, passou da aceleração propiciada por símbolos da modernidade europeia indústria automobilística, abertura dos portos ao comércio estrangeiro, intensa urbanização para uma grave estagnação econômica. Nesse período, o cinema se estabelece como principal entretenimento da metrópole e a eclosão da Primeira Guerra Mundial reflete-se no consumo de cinema da cidade.

Abstract

In the early twentieth century, the city of Manaus, northern Brazil, went through the last moments of the opulence provided by the profits of the Amazon rubber boom. In a period of about 40 years, it has gone from accelerating propitiated by symbols of the modern European auto industry, opening ports to foreign trade, intense urbanization to severe economic stagnation. Meanwhile, Cinema establishes itself as the main entertainment of the metropolis and the outbreak of World War I is reflected in the city's cinema consumption.
