TERRITÓRIO EM DEBATE: POR UMA LINGUAGEM CRÍTICA PARA A ARTE PÚBLICA

Resumo

O ensaio de Suzanne Lacy foi publicado no livro Mapping the Terrain: New Genre Public Art (1995), com o objetivo de contribuir com a crítica de arte acerca do novo gênero de arte pública. Esta nova arte pública é engajada politicamente e feita por artistas que, indissociavelmente, participam da sociedade enquanto artistas-cidadãos. Sendo assim, Lacy estrutura o ensaio em quatro seções, cada uma trata de um conceito-chave para a reflexão sobre a nova arte pública. São eles: Interação, Público, Intenção e Eficácia. A artista argumenta em prol da ressignificação e do uso diferenciado destes termos, já que a nova arte pública se distancia do ideal tradicional monumental, abrangendo contextos culturais diversos, logo, diferentes públicos.

DEBATED TERRITORY: TOWARD A CRITICAL LANGUAGE FOR PUBLIC ART

Abstract

This essay by Suzanne Lacy was published in the book Mapping the Terrain: New Genre Public Art (1995), aiming to enhance the discourse surrounding art criticism about the emerging genre of public art. This new public art is characterized by its political engagement  and created by artists who, inseparably, engage with society as artist-citizens. Thus, Lacy structures the essay in four sections, each one dealing with a key concept for reflection on the new public art. These concepts include: Interaction, Audience, Intention and Effectiveness. The artist argues in favor of the redefinition and nuanced application of these terms, as the new public art diverges from the conventional monumental ideal, encompassing diverse cultural contexts, and therefore, different audiences.
