VIOLENCE AND SOCIAL CRITICISM IN ASSUNÇÃO DE SALVIANO, BY ANTONIO CALLADO

Rosani Umbach

Abstract

The romance Assunção de Salviano (1954), by Antônio Callado, discusses the memory of the historical conflict that caused the massacre in the Canudos War, in this way, seeks to restore collective history through the tension between historiography and narration in the path of trilhar reflections around the cultural memory of such a traumatic event. The construction of images of nonromance Brazilian history, permeated by violence, is related, most of the time, to social inequality and state oppression, as can be seen in the recent Brazilian Republic. A particularity of romance establishes a sense of continuity, such as the chronological tempo becomes suspense. Images of violence are still present today, such as: the struggle of two people from the countryside, the poverty in the northeastern countryside, and the vulnerability of the people we live in. In this way, it seeks to analyze aspects of nonromance social criticism and its relationship with resistance.
