TROPICAL SUN OF FREEDOM: RESISTANCE FROM THE PERIPHERY

Abstract

This article examines the representation of resistance against the Brazilian military dictatorship in the novel Tropical sol da Liberdade (1988), by Ana Maria Machado, with the aim of analyzing the different peripheral perspectives that the narrative adopts. First, the text discusses the perspective of the characters who did not directly engage in the armed struggle, opting for other avenues of resistance. Next, it draws attention to the problem of the testimony genre, whose objectivity is questioned by the protagonist of the novel. Finally, it focuses on the female gaze, which is associated, among others, with the themes of the house and nature. Through the analysis of the “ex-centric” perspectives presented in this work, the article highlights its specific position in the context of the Brazilian narrative of the time that thematizes the military regime.
